joe_wise_photoCredentials: Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, Certified Anger Resolution Therapist.

Professional Background: Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary, 1965. Master of Arts (Counseling) from Appalachian State University, 1988. Pastoral Ministry from 1965 – 1990. Director of Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program at Laurelwood Psychiatric Hospital from 1991 – 1992. Psychotherapist at Woodlands Family Institute from 1991 to present.

Clinical Focus: I have a genuine concern for families and their well-being. My pastoral background provided me the opportunity to work with families in times of celebration, times of crisis, and times of sadness. I enjoy working with couples and I am challenged by the search with couples to find solutions to marriage and family discord. I am also interested in working with clients experiencing alcohol and drug problems. I was fortunate to study under Terry Gorski and learn a new cognitive approach to alcohol and drug treatment. This program provides a very successful relapse prevention approach to the treatment process. Additionally I enjoy working with adolescents and have always had the ability to connect with teens in significant ways. This normally produces good results in treatment. Helping teens who have problems stemming from ADD or ADHD is of special interest to me. I have also been successful working with men’s issues and men’s groups. I have found that spiritual healing, cognitive awareness, and behavioral change are necessary components of good treatment when working with men and their issues.

Interest: I love sports and the out-of-doors and I have found that golf provides me the opportunity to combine the two in a very rewarding way. I also enjoy horseback riding, biking, working in the yard, and traveling.

Treatment Philosophy: My goal in therapy is to assist the client in finding practical solutions to difficult problems. This normally involves assisting the client in developing greater harmony in life, centered in spirituality and focused on producing balanced living. Spiritual healing, cognitive awareness, and behavioral change are essential aspects in my clinical focus and in achieving my goal in therapy.
